My dog had a parvo vaccine gap. Is she safe around a new puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

While overlooking my dogs shot record I realized that as a puppy I waited months between her second parvo shot and the third round. She got the first parvo December 6, 2016, second shot January 3, 2017, and 3rd August 7, 2017. Just recently I took her for an updated parvo shot. I’m needing to know if the gap between second and third affected how protected she is now since I will be bringing a puppy home soon.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first two doses of parvo vaccine were given correctly but the third one was given way too late. It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.
