My cat has inflamed mouth, fur loss, and sores. Is it an allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 7 months old | 7.2 lbs

My cat has some inflammation around her mouth. There is fur missing and a small sore spot. This has been going on for several months. The first time, she got an antibiotic shot, which helped but there was still redness. Then she got a steroid shot and healed up. Now the problem is back two months after her steroid shot. Negative skin scraping in May ruled out parasites. My vet is booked for the next 3 weeks so I’m looking for advice until I can take her in. Photos attached. Thank you!

This looks like an allergy, especially because it healed with a steroid injection. I would not recommend continuing steroid injections are they can predispose her to health problems. I would switch her to stainless steel bowls and consider a dermatology appointment to work up the skin disease.
