Should I mix gabapentin and Rescue Remedy for my cat's road trip?

Can I give my cat rescue remedy mixed with gabapentin to help calm during a long road trip? My vet recommended both, but I was unsure if they could be combined

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about your cat. I can't find any interactions between them, but I would give one or the other, not both at the same time. You don't want to over-sedate your cat. I'd use the gabapentin for the road trip. We are using gabapentin now more commonly in pets with anxiety or fear prior to stressful events such as a trip to the vet. This could possibly include a road trip as well. This is, however, a prescription medication so it will require a visit to a veterinarian for an examination of your cat or a call to your vet if they have seen your cat recently to determine if they feel the drug is safe and appropriate for your cat in particular. We cannot prescribe medication via this website since we haven't personally examined your cat. Other options that may help with mild anxiety would include Feliway pheremone spray https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected in the cat carrier, and calming supplements such as Composure for cats https://www.vetriscience.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=9008103030 or Zylkene.

I have a gabapentin prescription for my one-year-old cat for 100mg to sedate him on a long car ride. I recently got a four-month-old kitten. Can I give him the same medication?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about your kitten. No you cannot do this. The dose will be different because the kitten will weigh less than your one year old cat, and you could accidentally overdose the kitten. Plus you don't know if it's safe for him. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Yes, 100mg is a normal dosage for an average sized adult cat. You can open the capsule and mix the powder with a small amount of canned food. Only use enough canned food to mask the powder. If you mix it with a large amount of canned food and she doesn't eat it all, she won't get the full dose. Be sure to give it at least 2-3 hours prior to the appointment. I often recommend people give a dose at home on a day that you can be with him as a trial run so you can see how the drug affects him. You may find that it seems like it is doing nothing for him or you may see that he is too sedate or maybe it is just right. But you can take note to see how long it takes to affect him after he ingests it - some cats take 2-3 hours to get sedate and others only need 30 minutes to an hour. This way you can get the timing right for dosing him for his appointment. You don't have to do this but it may be a good idea as "test run". Hope this helps. Best wish

It is safe to give these medications together and they are often prescribed for sedation. The sedation typically lasts 12-24 hours. You could ask your vet about trying the medications before you travel to make sure the level of sedation seems appropriate; that way you could discuss a dose adjustment with your vet if needed.

My cat is prescribed s/c stress food containing tryptophan. I am moving and the vet provided gabapentin for the trip. Are there any concerns with this interaction?
Gabapentin does not have any listed drug interactions with tryptophan (potential interactions include hydrocodone, morphine and antacids), so we wouldn't expect any negative effects from the combination of the two, but you can always check with your vet to be certain since they know your pet's medical history best!

Gabapentin can cause sedation in some cats but not all. You can try a dose that your vet prescribed to see if it helps with a short car trip around the block. If it doesn't work, I would talk to your vet about a different medication, possibly alprazolam and also use Cerenia, which prevents nausea often associated with motion sickness in these kitties.

Hi there, I always recommend trialing the sedation with a quick drive around the neighborhood before the big day to ensure that the kitty is calm enough. CBD is being studied for pets right now, but the hard data for recommending dosages isn't available yet. As well, many CBD advertised products will have enough THC to cause toxicity in pets, so I do caution to monitor closely and not give large amounts of a product you are unfamiliar with. I cannot think of a reason that a missing eye would interfere with mild sedation but I don't have the whole medical record either. Medications like Gabapentin or Trazodone would be more commonly prescribed for mild anxiety reducing and sedative purposes for a long drive. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Is 150mg of gabapentin presented in cat food appropriate for a 15 lb cat that is 3 years old prior to nail cutting?
Unfortunately it is illegal for us to give dose information for prescription drugs without seeing your cat in person first. You need to check with Purrrcy's vet to see if this is an appropriate dose. Gabapentin in cats, however, is typically used for pain not sedation.

Hi, no this is the dosage we use for a standard weight cat to make them a bit drowsy and less anxious to go and see the vet, it normally works very well ! It sounds a lot but it is what we normally give. Hope this helps and that it works well for you too.

Hi, a little over 4 hrs ago i gave my cat her regular gabapentin dose-25mg tiny tab. I don't c where its made a difference in her pain/limping. I have amantadine as well & wanted to know if i can give her a dose now or is it to close to the gaba? Thx
Gabapentin and amantadine can be given simultaneously, as there are no interactions between these drugs. They work quite well together to manage cases of neuropathic pain! Make sure to follow the dosing instructions from Kitkat's vet closely. If you are questioning the efficacy of Kitkat's medications, consider discussing alternative medication options with her vet.
