Why is my dog's penis red after steroids and increased peeing?

Is this okay? My dog recently had an FCE last week and he’s been peeing more because of steroids. Noticed it and compared it to an older picture. The second picture is what it looked like years ago. He is an 8 pound morkie

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Lucky and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. His penis does look a bit red and irritated. It may be worth getting checked out by a vet to be safe. I'd take him into a vet today. Best of luck.

This may be due to inflammation or irritation which may be just transient. However, if this is not transient, he should evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. I see what you are talking about and I would describe them as erosions or ulcers. Honestly I’ve not see this on the penis like this before but I would start with topical therapy. So gently rinse the whole penis with diluted iodine or chlorhexidine solutilon. Then pat dry, put on some sterile lubricant and replace the penis. I would do this once daily for a few days to see if that helps. Other thoughts are an antibiotic trial, and antifungal trial. a culture of the area, a biopsy (maybe, if deemed possible by your vet) or, if getting much worse or spreading, talk to your vet about the pros and cons of a course of steroids in case it is some unusual auto-immune disease. Hello, my dog has itchy penis, he is always scratching it. He also has filled discharge. I gave him a bath and didn't help. This is going on for a while now and I don't know what else to do. Please help, thank you.
I would recommend our veterinarian check a urine sample on Lucky to make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. I would also discuss a prostate infection with your veterinarian since he is still intact. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

My dogs penis head is red and inflamed. It doesnt look to be cut but is only inflamed on one side. It doesnt seem to bother him but is questionable as there is white pus on the end. What does this look like to u and is this an emergency?
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Judging from the photo that you provided, the prepuce (sheath of the penis) looks red at the tip and appears that it may be infected. If you are seeing pus or small white heads, then I would classify this as a skin infection. I would recommend applying a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray to the affected area twice daily until this is resolved. You can purchase this spray online quite easily. I hope this helps! My dog has a blister or redness to the tip of his penis. It drips drops of blood, but he doesn't seem to be sick. His urine is dark and smells at times. Is there anything I can put on to get better?
There appears to be some major inflammation at the tip of the penis, most likely from an injury or excessive licking. My best recommendation to you would be to have Taco examined by your veterinarian. I would bring a urine sample to he appointment if you are able to catch one. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This would in fact warrant a recheck with your veterinarian. They may choose to proceed with diagnostics at this point such as a prostatic wash or perhaps just trying a different antibiotic. Hopefully this is nothing serious. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I would recommend bringing him in for an examination by a veterinarian given your description and this photo. We could have something like an abscess or cellulitis developing if the area is swollen and bruised, and the penis itself should be examined. We can also get infections inside the prepuce (the sheath of skin covering the penis) that may require antibiotics and it sounds like he could benefit from pain medication as well.

Should I be worried if my dogs pennies is a little red and has a little bit of discharge is what it looks like
Yes, I would be concerned about Guapo in that this redness and discharge can indicate an infection. From the pictures, it look like the discharge could be pus. He could have an infection of the prepuce (the penile sheath), or he could have a UTI or bladder stones causing these symptoms. I would gently wipe the area with warm water on a soft cloth, and have him seen by a vet. The vet can examine him and diagnose what is causing this redness and discharge so he can be treated. Taking him into a vet today would be best if possible. When dogs have infections, they can lick the area because it's uncomfortable to them, but licking it will make it worse. I would put an Ecollar on him if you notice him licking his penis area. You can make one at home or you can buy one at a pet shop. If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! From your pictures that is actually normal . The tip of the prepuce can look like that because you can see the inside tissue of the prepuce. I would assume that you can see if better now since the hair has been removed. Unless he is uncomfortable and licking his penis I wouldn't take him in. I hope this helps!
