My cat ate amoxicillin by mistake. Will he overdose or be okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I have multiple cats, and one is currently on 125 mg of amoxicillin and weighs 15 lbs. My other cat just ate the food with the medicine in it and he only weighs 8 lbs. Is he going to be okay? Will he overdose?

I would not be overly concerned, although the recommended dose is 5-10mg/lb (and an 8lb cat would have consumed approx 15mg/lb) it does have a wide safety margin and overdose symptoms are very rare. I would expect some mild gastrointestinal upset and a probiotic would be helpful to reduce the impact on the natural gut balance
