My dog has a red, round bald spot on her neck. Is a vet visit urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 15 lbs

My dog has a round bald spot on her neck. Just today it has gotten red which could have been from her being out in the sun. Should I continue to monitor or take her to vet ASAP? She is 5 mo. Old frenchie

I wouldn’t consider it an emergency, but I would recommend taking Scout to the vet to have this evaluated. It could be a bacterial or fungal infection, mites, a small mass, etc. if you see her scratching at it, you may need to cover it with doggie clothes or an e-collar (depending on where it is located).

What you are describing can be a localized skin infection, small growth or lump, or a wound. Because the area is bleeding, I recommend keeping it as clean as possible and making sure that Frankie isn’t able to get to it. You can get her an E-collar or “cone” to prevent this. If the bleeding continues, or the bump grows, I recommend having it examined by a veterinarian, as it may need to be removed. Your vet can send the growth off for a biopsy to determine exactly what it is. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Poor Lexi! That looks very red and inflammed. The best thing would be to have a vet examine her and treat. An antibiotic and a corticosteroid would probably help treat the lesion. If you can't take her to a vet then keep the area clean and monitor.
