Why does my indoor cat have bald spots on his front legs?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

I noticed to bald spots on my cats front legs.. checked everywhere else and he was ok. Should I be worried? Or what could this be? He has always been an indoor cat. Recently I built him an enclosure so he can go out to watch the squirrels all morning

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kitty and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. I'm wondering if he snagged some fur on the enclosure causing the fur loss. He may have gotten excited seeing the squirrels and moved suddenly, causing some fur to snag and pull out. I would just keep an eye on it for now. If it gets worse, appears infected, or starts to bother him, then I would have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! There is a variety of reasons that can explain alopecia or hair loss. The causes can easily be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If Severus is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect cats and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice him overgrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Hair loss in cats can be due to a variety of reasons, including skin parasites (mites or fleas), an infection (bacterial or fungal), allergies, stress, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having him evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine what may be causing the hair loss, and any treatment that may be needed to improve or resolve it. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. The cause of the hair loss could be allergies or skin mites as well. I would make sure the veterinarian scrapes the skin to check for parasites of the skin. This may also need an oral antibiotic in addition to topical therapy to see if it will respond. You can also try a different shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly. If there is no improvement and your vet is unable to resolve this, I would recommend a second opinion with a veterinary dermatologist if possible. I hope this helps! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is unclear why he would have an open wound like that but likely due to some form of trauma. However, this does warrant an evaluation as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sadly your attached picture is of poor quality and I can not see the area of concern. Causes of hair loss are: trauma/rubbed it on something (got caught), skin infection, ringworm or mites. Also cats can develop a behavioral condition where they over groom. Please feel free to start a consult or repost with a different picture. I recommend that you schedule an exam for Koneko with your Vet when they reopen. Cat (M, 9mo) developed balding patches on his 2 hind legs. He does not appear to pay special attention to that area when cleaning himself. He has been scratching himself a bit more with his hind legs to his ears but nothing excessive. Spots developed
The areas I see do look like wear from pressure from sitting or lying down. As long as the skin looks healthy and he behaves normally, I would wait until his next routine visit to show them to your vet. If they do seem to bother him or if he starts feeling poorly, get him in to see your vet as soon as possible to determine if this is a sign of an underlying condition that needs to be treated.

My outside cat has a small patch of fur missing from the top of his head. It doesn't seem to bother him nor is it bleeding but it worries me. What do you think might have caused it?

Hi, I noticed that Skye has 2 bald spots on her front legs ( 1 on each) she still acts her normal self, eat ( wet and dry food) drinks normally, no new food was introduced to her. She's indoors only. I haven't noticed any over grooming. Any ideas
Hello, more than likely this is due to over zealous grooming. In cats particularly, stress may cause them to over groom. Alternatively, having a skin infection or allergies may also cause them to have hairloss. If Skye continues to have patchy areas of hairless, then she should be evaluated to ensure she does not have an infection (ringworm, superficial pyoderma, ectoparasites) or allergies.
