My cat has a scabbed growth on his back. Is it a skin tag or a tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

I need to know if my cat has a skin tag on his back, if it’s something worse, or if it is no big deal. It currently has a scab on part of it as we accidentally cut it when shaving him.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a skin growth. If it is bleeding, getting bigger or causing discomfort to Cosmo, you should take him to your local vet for an appointment to rule out malignant skin mass. It it stays small and is not bothering your cat, you can monitor it at home for now.

This could just be a benign growth or it could be a scab from an injury. If it isn't bothering him, keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger, doesn't heal, and/or starts to bother him, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.
