Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 4 years and 7 months old

My dog was having hives for which vet prescribed him prednisolone 10mg one tablet only one day and my concern is like after giving him this tablet few hours later he started drinking water and was doing frequent urination but came back normal the very other day So is this frequent urination is common side effect of prednisolone or was that something serious ?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Danny. I'm sorry he has hives. Excessive drinking and urination are common side effects of prednisone, so this is to be expected. Once he has finished his course of prednisone, the side effects should go away. I hope this helps!

Dexamethasone is a steroid and it will cause him to drink more and urinate more, this is a normal side effect. While noticeable and often frustrating, it is not problematic. Do watch for vomiting ad lack of appetite, though, and if you notice either of these things occurring, please contact your vet and ask if they recommend that you continue this dose of dexamethasone. You might also inquire about "tapering" the dose, or slowly decreasing the dose rather than stopping the dexamethasone suddenly. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Increased thirst and urination is a normal side effect of dexamethasone. These symptoms should decrease over the next few days, but call your vet and ask if they need to recheck her after her episode and describe her symptoms. They may have more specific advice for you.
