Can I exercise my dog after she swallowed a stick and saw the vet

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 30 lbs

We think my dog swallowed part of a stick last night (~23 hours ago). She’s been to the vet and they just said to watch out for symptoms of GI upset and give her a diet of boiled chicken, rice, and pumpkin for a few days. Is it okay to exercise her as normal? She is VERY active. Or should we take it easy for a few days just in case? Thank you!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Ellie! Oh no, that's not good, but it is good she didn't eat the screw. Given that you think it may have been a day or two since she ate it, and because she is acting normally, I'd just keep an eye on her for now. If she starts vomiting, stops eating or has a loss of appetite, has diarrhea, blood in her poop, starts acting lethargic, and/or has any other concerning behavior, then I would take her into the vet right away. I would monitor her over the next week to be safe. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would monitor Ripley for now as there are no clinical symptoms to be concerned about. What I would recommend doing would be to feed bread slices with pure canned pumpkin to help booked up the feces around the object to help prevent it from causing any punctures in the intestinal tract potentially. If you begin to see any symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, inappetence or anything else out of the ordinary I would get Ripley seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later and have abdominal x-rays taken to see if the stick has caused any issues. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco! Allie is likely going to be just fine. As long as she is eating, drinking and not lethargic / inappetant then I would just monitor her at home. If she begins to exhibit any of the above mentioned symptoms, I would get her seen by a veterinarian for an examination and to have abdominal x-rays taken to make sure that there is no intestinal obstruction from the bully stick. I would feed her a bland diet as outlined below for at least 3 days past the resolution of the vomiting. I hope this helps! Hello. Puppies will swallow small sticks with no problems, but you can help them to pass by lubricating her gut. Feeding bread is good, but I like to smear the bread with some Vaseline & feed Lilly this. In addition, you can feed her 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) twice a day for the next few days. If she does not have any problems over the next 2-3 days, like vomiting, diarrhea ( some soft stool will be normal from the Vaseline & pumpkin ), or she quits eating, then she will be fine. You can stop the pumpkin at this point. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! A light walk probably won't hurt but yes you are right about Bloat. It's very serious and any exercise after eating can be a problem. But it's usually vigorous activity like running, playing, fetching. Light walks should not be a problem and I don't see that as a big risk factor. Lots of owners do the same thing that you did. Also don't let her drink a big bowl of water around the time of vigorous activity. Small sips are ok but not huge gulps of water. So it's good to be careful and vigilant. The signs of Bloat include dry heaves (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), restlessness, not able to get comfortable, crying or moaning in discomfort, pacing, not wanting to lay down. I think you did the right thing walking her and I like the fact that you are aware of Bloat. Good job educating yourself on this important topic.

I don't think this is urgent at all. I think you should fast Ellie for the next 24 hours and see if she continues to have any more vomiting episodes. If there is more than two more, I would consider getting her in somewhere to get checked out. Otherwise, after the fasting period feed something bland for a day or two before resuming regular diet. Try boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburger. You can also try and obtain Ellie's temperature at home to check for fever (normal is between 99 and 102.5). Take a look at the gums to verify a nice and pink color and moist consistency. Hope this helps. I'm sure Ellie will be just fine and probably just ate something that upset her.

If she is not eating and weak she should be checked by a vet to rule out internal injuries. A gentle walk of no longer than 5minutes on the lead may help to stimulate her physically and mentally but you should stop immediately if she becomes breathless or lame and seek emergency veterinary attention

I can certainly understand your concerns about Finn's stick ingestion, but the good news is that it sounds as though he's still doing very well at home. Stick ingestion is a bit of a tricky situation. Even if you had taken Finn to his vet immediately after he'd eaten the stick, your vet would likely have advised against inducing vomiting. The induction of vomiting of potentially sharp objects risks perforation of the esophagus, which is extremely dangerous. The only other ways to get the stick out are a) wait for it to pass or b) surgically remove it. At this point, the fact that Finn is doing well at home (namely eating, drinking, and acting normally without any vomiting or diarrhea) indicates that it's still more than reasonable to simply wait and give him more time to pass it. While I can't definitively tell you that surgery is absolutely not indicated without having examined Finn, it doesn't sound as though it's something that you need to urgently pursue by taking him to the vet.
