Dog post-op: Why are there slits near her abdominal incision?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 65 lbs

My 4yr old Pitbull terrier just had a MCT removed from abdomen. The vet stapled her up and also left slits in the area of her belly. Have you ever seen this before? What is the procedure called? Tissue was submitted to pathology. Have not received stage or grade yet. Thank you for your time.

This was likely done to reduce tension on the incision. Since such a large section of tissue was removed, not making these small cuts in the surrounding tissue would increase the risk that the incision would open up even if sutured or stapled. You will need to keep the area clean, dry and free of debris. A bandage may be applied, however it would need to be changed daily or more frequently to keep the area clean. An e-collar should also be used to prevent licking until healing is complete.
