Is Desonide ointment harmful if my cat licks it off his fur?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

My cat was laying on me, and got some .05% Desonide ointment on his fur. It was not a lot, and he has not licked it yet. I am afraid that when he does lick it off, it will be harmful to him. Is this poisonous?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Chandler. This won't be good for him to ingest, it's a mild corticosteroid, but it's not hugely toxic to him. I would wipe it off of him with a damp cloth to keep it him from licking it. I hope this helps!

There is not a concern for ingesting prednisolone in and of itself. I am not sure if the formulation you are using is intended only for topical use, so may have some ingredients that shouldn’t be ingested, however if it was just a small amount, I wouldn’t be concerned. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea or acting lethargic, have him evaluated by a vet; but again I wouldn’t be too concerned. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Can I safely use hydrocortisone on my 13 pound, 10 year old cat?
In general this is not advisable since human products are not made to be ingested. Cat grooming themselves very frequently and thus are likely to get the product in their mouth. Most treatments for cats will be systemic. Otherwise the veterinarian will carry pet safe ointments and sprays. Most of these cats will also wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking. is it ok for my cat to lick the ointment on his anus's inflammation?
I am unsure what ointment it is that your pet is licking, but generally speaking if this is an ointment that is labeled safe for pets, then to prevent Mostafa from getting an upset stomach licking this stuff, you should apply the ointment, then allow it to sit for 20 minutes unlicked, so that it can be absorbed into the skin. As long as you do this you should be fine. Another alternative is to place an e-collar on Mostafa at all times to prevent any licking of the product.

If ingesting enough of it, it can. The best thing to do is place a small amount on the affected area and play with the kitten to distract him or feed him so he eats while it dries some. If it is a persist problem then you may need an e collar to place on his neck so he can't reach it or talk to your vet about a different treatment

Can I put cortisone on my cats skin. He has a little spot (itchy) that is red and irritated.
Depending on where it is. I prefer cortisone cream and use a very thin film on the spot, and rub it in well. If your cat can lick the area you need to use a cone as it is not good for them to lick lot if it. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Boy.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Pixie! It is ok if Pixie licks a little of it. It would be best to consider an E-collar to prevent all licking and to give the skin a chance to heal. I do recommend that if her skin isn't better in a few days that you have a Vet look at her. Hope this helps!

The amount of steroid shouldn't be harmful to Sky. Use caution with the chloramphenicol though. It can cause bone marrow suppression in some dogs and aplastic anemia in some people. A safer option would be to use a shirt or recovery wear for pets. A bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple Spray or Fooey!, can be used around the site to deter licking.

I don't see any warnings on the product about it being a problem if the animal ingests it when licking it, but to keep her from licking it off, I would keep an Ecollar on Missy while you are using this spray. I did research the name, and I could not find any information about it being toxic to cats. I suspect that if it was causing problems, it would have come up on my veterinary database. However, I am not a big fan of essential oils in cats. They do not tolerate them as well as dogs do. So, I would not use it again in my cats to be on the safe side. I think that they are going to be just fine. If they did start to show irritation - you will need to bathe in Dawn dish soap to get the oil off. My cat may have ingested a small amount of Gold Bond Anti-Itch Cream.
She may experience some vomiting and diarrhea as a result, especially if the lotion contained zinc oxide. A small amount is probably not going to be a problem, but if she gets sick, if she develops blood in her stool, loses her appetite and/or becomes lethargic, get her in to see your vet right away.
