Why does my 3-month-old puppy have small bald patches on his fur?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 1 day old | 20 lbs

I have a 3 month old puppy. He is 85% Pitbull and 15% Doberman. I noticed these very small bald patches on his fur. What is this? And what is the cause of this?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Simba and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. I see what you mean about these bald patches. They don't look red or irritated, and the fur loss may be from an injury or a skin infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for sure. I do think it's worth getting checked out by a vet, so I would call his vet now to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to ringworm. This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Sasha evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Sasha, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thanks for also adding photos. Since I can’t see Prince McArthur up close I can’t for sure but it is possible he has microscopic mites. These mites are not itchy and not contagious but can cause hair loss especially in young puppies. I recommend taking him to a vet so they can look with a microscope and get him treatment if necessary. Good luck and kisses to Prince McArthur!

My puppy has patches where there's no fur, it doesn't seem to itch or anything, had a scab from a pimple like bump and when it fell there was no fur.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! There is a possibility Colt has a skin mite called demodex (mange). These mites are microscopic and don’t cause the pet to scratch. I recommend taking him to a vet where they can scrape his skin and look for the mite with a microscope. They can also look for a secondary bacterial infection from the mite. Once they have a diagnosis they can prescribe him the correct medications to treat his skin. Good luck and kisses to Colt!

It's tough to say exactly what's causing Pablo's patch of hair loss from a picture alone. I agree that I don't see any redness, scaling or signs of inflammation in the picture. Some possible causes can include scar tissue from an injury or burn, infectious conditions like mange or ringworm, a sebaceous (oil gland) cyst or histiocytoma. Pablo should be examined by his vet so that diagnostic testing can be performed. It's likely that your vet will need to take samples from this area to be evaluated under the microscope. Once the cause of this issue is diagnosed, then your vet will be able to determine the best course of treatment. This is certainly not an emergency, so if many of your local vets are currently closed or have less availability, it's not a big deal if you need to wait a few extra weeks. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Dog's hair falling out in one spot
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Sammy and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. In the picture, I swear I see some dry, flakey skin. I'm wondering if he has a skin infection causing the hair loss and flakey skin. Without seeing him in person, I can't make a definitive diagnosis. Areas of hair loss can be due to a variety of causes, including skin parasites (mites or fleas), allergies, an infection (bacterial or fungal), or another underlying medical issue. If the spots are worsening or spreading, or if they are itchy/seem uncomfortable, I would recommend Zulu be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her hair loss, have any necessary testing done (skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment (parasiticide, anti-itch medication, antibiotic) that she may need to resolve it. Hello there, Round, circular patches of hair loss are often indicative of a severe skin infection. Simon needs to see his veterinarian this week. They will recommend testing some of his skin to see if bacteria or fungus is causing these lesions to know which medications to use. They may also recommend medicated shampoos. There may be an underlying predisposing factor in this skin infection, such as an allergy to an animal protein in his diet or the environment. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My baby girl is shedding fur. I am now worried since I can see some bald spot in the skin. Is this something to worry? She is 5 months old soon.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lily Cruz! Is Lily scratching? I would have her seen by your Vet. The most common causes of excessive shedding and areas of balding are: demodex (non-contagious mite), ring worm and a skin infection. Demodex can be easily treated with one of the oral flea/tick preventatives (Nexgard, Simparica or Bravecto). Skin infections are treat with antibiotics or anti-fungals if it is yeast. Ring worm can be a bit more complicated. I do not think it is normal shedding because she shouldn't have areas that are thin or balding. I wish you the best!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It’s hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like there is a skin infection on Noheas head. An infection could cause bumps and hair loss. A common cause of skin infections in young pit bulls is mange (demodex). These are microscopic mites that don’t cause scratching. I recommend taking Nohea to a vet for a close exam of her skin. They will need to look at cells under the microscope to diagnose this. They can then get her medications to treat the infection and mites if needed. Good luck and kisses to Nohea!
