My kitten has a swollen, red leg and can't walk. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, i have a kitten (less than 12 weeks old) who has a swollen, red back leg. It use to just be the upper part of the leg so i assumed she was bit by something, but now her entire leg is HUGE and she can't walk on it at all! I've tried calling 3 different animal clinics and no one would take me in. I don't know what to do, please help!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It probably is an infection affecting most of the leg. It is an emergency. Please, try and call your local emergency service if your regular vets don't have any appointments.

This paw could be injured or there could be a lack of blood supply to it's leg. This is a medical emergency, and this kitten has to see a vet now. Please take it as well as it's mother and siblings into a vet now.
