My dog's stitches are red post-surgery. Infected or just needs rest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 62 lbs

My dog had a soft tissue sarcoma removed from his right front leg 9 days ago. He has been healing fine but I had to leave him with my parents today. I think they let him walk too much because his stitches are noticeably red. I have a picture from yesterday and it was flesh colored. Can you tell me if it is infected, I should take him to the vet, or make sure he gets extra rest? Thank you.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Geno and for providing pictures, they are very helpful! I see what you mean about the area being a little more irritated than before. I definitely see how it's redder. I don't think it's infected, so I would keep an eye on him for now. Rest him more, and if it gets redder, warm to the touch, swollen, or you see pus, then take him into the vet. I hope this helps!
