My cat's booster shots are overdue. How long can he safely wait?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

My cat is 3 mos. overdue for routine booster shots...he’ll be 3 yrs old on Sept 1. I had to postpone his shots appt on March 19 because of Covid concerns...still can’t get him to his vet, not reopened yet bec. Of Covid. My question is, how long can he wait for these routine maintenance booster shots before his health is compromised in some way? Thank you.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Skipper. He should be ok for another few months, but I'd keep him indoors at all times to be safe if he is allowed outside. I remember recently I fell almost a year behind in one of my cat's vaccines because I was so busy and forgot, but I was able to vaccinate him with no issue. But he is indoor only, so it wasn't a big deal as he wasn't exposed to any other animals. Get his vaccines when you can. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Theo. You want to stay as close to 3-6 weeks between vaccines or they will not be as effective. Beyond 6 weeks is too long so if it's under 6 weeks you will be ok. I hope this helps and you are able to make it under the wire. Good luck

My cat is fully vaccinated, however, his booster appointment will be 14 days past their due date. Note: He is up to date on his rabies vaccine for another 2 years. Do I need to make an appointment with someone who will see him sooner? Thank you
Since he is six years old an presumably has been kept current on his vaccinations he should have plenty of built-in immunity to tide him over. It is possible to have a titer blood test done to see if he even needs to have a booster, but the drawback to this is that the blood test sometimes costs more than simply doing the vaccinations and it does no harm to give the vaccination.

Yes, it should be fine if you need to wait a little bit to give a booster vaccine, especially if your cats have been kept up to date on all of their vaccines prior to this. If you are unsure you can wait, your vet can also perform a titer test to check for antibodies, or can let you know if you are on a one-year or three-year vaccine schedule.

We have brought a kitten but due to the current coronavirus situation we can’t get his first vaccines done. Will this affect him?
Hello. Hopefully your kitten will have some maternal immunity, that is, immunity from his mother. If you keep him indoors with no exposure to other unvaccinated cats, he will be fine until you can start his vaccinations. The important thing is to minimize all potential exposure, so no going outdoors, even into a protected area, until he receives his entire kitten series. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Yes, go ahead and take him as soon as you can so he gets fully protected. Since he's already had some vaccinations the booster is just to increase his immunity level. That will give him increased protection. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Felix.

If I am two weeks late getting puppy's third round of shots is that bad?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It isn't too terrible, he is just unprotected at this time. Your Vet may now want him to get a 2nd booster 3 weeks later. I would get him in this week for the booster. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Max is still finishing his kitten vaccines they I would get his next booster. I am assuming you are referring to it being due Jan 12 2018? And it is the FVRCP vaccine. If you do not get his vaccinations he will be a risk for those diseases. You need to decide the risk reward for keeping him up to date. Personally I think you should if you have multiple cats, he goes outdoors, if you ever plan on getting more cats or you plan to breed him. I hope this helps and I wish you and Max the best!

My dogs yearly vaccinations expired late June however I can’t get her into the vet til august 12 will that put her at Risk with a gap of a month
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. It is unlikely that being late by a month will increase Riley's risk of becoming infected with any of the diseases that are prevented by the vaccines. The vaccines work to increase Riley's immune protection, and this should last long enough until she gets her next vaccine in August. Based on what state you are in, there are different laws for the Rabies vaccine. If she is late even by one day, some states require her to get the Rabies vaccine that only lasts 1 year, rather than the one that lasts 3 years. That is the only issue I can think of that could apply, but again, this depends on what state you are in. I hope this is helpful!

Need to continue vaccines from last month do I need to do immediately in December or can I wait for January
Vaccines for kittens should be given 4 weeks apart. It is best to stay as close to that schedule as possible and can be difficult this time of year due to the holidays. If waiting until January is only a week behind, it will be fine. If waiting that long pushes them several weeks behind, then it is best to do them. At their ages this should be the final round

I adopted a kitten through a rescue and he has had all of his shots. He is only 6 months old and is strictly indoors. The vet through the rescue is insisting on booster shots but the rescue says this is not necessary. Can you give me an opinion?
Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Great question! The recommended vaccination schedule for kittens is first shots at 8 weeks of age and then two sets of boosters at 12 and 16 weeks of age. You would be surprised how many times an owner has told me the kitten "had all of it's shots already" only to find out it only received one set. If Roky at all three sets of vaccines as stated above, then no, he doesn't need boosters. If the vaccine booster sets were not given at the correct interval (every 3-4 weeks) then he would need a booster. If Roky only received one set of vaccines or two sets, then he would need an additional booster. No offense, but if the vet is recommending the vaccine boosters then it is likely necessary. I would go with what the vet says before going with what the rescue says. It is a small price to pay to make sure he has the proper immunity going forward.
