My dog's paw is inflamed and he's limping. Is it a foxtail or abscess?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

HI. I have a 70 lb dog with a paw injury. He is definitely bothered by it (favoring it/licking/limping), but hes also just a year old and VERY active. I was getting ready to take him out to the park to play now that its cooler out, but not sure if that a good idea. Im worried that perhaps this sore is a foxtail or splinter that stuck in deep with the skin grown over. Its clearly inflamed around the area and the sore itself is raised. Hopefully the pic can show the damage well enough. Any advice

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a small abscess. It could be caused by a foreign body that went under the skin but not necessarily. Please, take your dog to your local vets as the lump will have to be lanced and flushed. Also, most likely your dog will be prescribed a course of antibiotics.
