My cat's fur is lumpy and she cries when touched. Is it a skin problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 10.5 lbs

My cat's fur is normally soft and smooth and it has become stiff and lumpy as if some has fallen out but there are no bald spots. I'm worried about her skin because she will not let anyone touch her back and if you do even gently she will meow or hiss as though something is causing her discomfort. Could she have some kind of skin problem? She does not scratch or groom excessively and her behavior otherwise is normal. She eats, plays and used the litter box normally.

Poor Rosie! It definitely sounds like something is bothering her. Yes, I do think this is something that should be checked out by your veterinarian. She may have sections of hair that have become matted and are causing pain, or may have a skin condition underneath the "bumpy" sections of hair that is causing it to feel this way. Your veterinarian can examine her skin to see what's going on and see what kind of treatment is needed.
