Why is my 9-month-old cat breathing fast at rest and not stabilizing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 months and 23 days old

Hello, my cat is nine months old and i’ve noticed from time to time she breathes really fast and inconsistently even when she hasn’t ran, like right now she’s resting after running around about half an hour ago and her breathing still hasn’t stabilized, should i be worried?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Scimmietta. Yes, this is concerning. Her breathing should have stabilized by now, and this can be an indication of a problem. She is a young cat, but it could be she has a problem with her heart causing this breathing problem. Before you get upset, keep in mind that it's summer in Italy where you live, and she may be breathing really fast due to the heat. Keep her in a cool, dark room. Have her seen by a vet to get a health check. Best of luck.
