My dog has pancreatitis, won't eat rice. What can I feed her?

I NEED AN ALTERNATIVE TO RICE. On the 14th of June my 2 year old female Chihuahua was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She was sent home with 7 days worth of CLAVAMOX chewables and has since finished them. The vet told me she could go back on Iams if not vomiting but she vomited that you yesterday. I have no problem cooking for her until she is better but I need another option. She loves the boiled chicken but spits the rice out. What can I give her in place of rice? Pasta or potatoes maybe?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Fiona. If she won't eat rice, plain pasta is fine. Whole wheat pasta would be good but if she won't eat that, regular pasta will be good for her. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that Fiona is dealing with pancreatitis. As Dr. Elizabeth mentioned, there are several low fat prescription diets on the market that can be helpful for longterm use. However, while you're dealing with this current vomiting issue, I agree that a homemade bland diet is perfectly reasonable. Since Fiona won't eat the rice, you can certainly try other starchy options. Plain potatoes or pasta are perfectly reasonable options, provided that you don't season them or use any butter or oil. Just be sure to mix them with a lean protein source, such as boiled chicken breast. The goal with any bland diet is to keep it as low in fat and simple as possible. If her vomiting continues, certainly have her rechecked by her veterinarian. I hope that she feels better soon!

Hello ! My chihuahua got pancreatitis and the vet gave meds and a special food for him but he is not eating also I tried boiled chicken and rice but he still doesn’t wanna eat . What should I do ?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor little Biscuit. I am going to talk from a professional and personal standpoint. My dog has chronic pancreatitis so I have been exactly where you are at. The main thing about pancreatitis is to get patients to eat as soon as possible which of course can be quite challenging of course as they do not feel well. The main reason why is that pancreatitis can cause pain and mainly nausea so it is crucial to get patients on anti-nausea medications as well as medications for pain control. I recommend that you check which medications he is on to see if there is something that can be added. I highly recommend a medication called ondansetron for nausea, Entyce for appetite stimulation and Tramadol for pain control. I think ondansetron makes a huge difference as does Entyce so I think that would be great for Biscuit. Best of luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

My dog has pancreatitis diagnosed but local vet yesterday morning. He has fast for almost 48 hours and is super weak. He has major constipation and vomitted brown liquid last night. When can I reintroduce food to him and what kind?
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. You can introduce low fat food now. Small portion of cooked chicken or other lean meat will be the best option. However, if Beaux continues to to vomit and being weak and lethargic, you should take him back to your local vets as he may need more aggressive treatment with intravenous fluids, intravenous painkillers and anti-sickness medications.

Pancreatitis is a very tricky disease and has two diatcint presentations. There is the acute form where they are incredibly sick, non stop vomiting or dirrhoea and require hospitalisation for intensive support. There is the second form which is chronic and requires home care and support. Potentially lifetime changes to food types which are bland and low in fat. Hello, my dad just had a bought with pancreatitis. I keep trying to give him bland food and he will not eat it. Tried vet. Food. Would not eat it. He will eat dog cookies and prochutto. I do not get it.
Dogs with pancreatitis are incredibly nauseous and very painful. He is likely eating what he feels up to eating. It's ok for a few days until he starts feeling perky again, then you can get him back to his normal dog food.

Good evening. A yorkshire terrier of about 16months was found with pancreatitis. Beside the can food with low fat provided and found in shops, what home made food can be introduced slowly in her diet?
I would feed only the low fat canned or dry diet (royal canin intestinal low fat is my preferred option) for 6 weeks to promote recovery. After this a little boiled skinless chicken, white fish, low fat cottage cheese or egg can often be safely added as well as brown rice and pasta cooked without any additional fat. Add no more than one ingredient per week and monitor for any colic or abdominal discomfort

My dog has acute pancreatitis.. She weighs 105lbs and had been on medication since Thursday. Currently I'm only feeding her 12 tablespoons a day of the prescription dog food but that seems really little for a dog her size
It is best to go slow with feedings after a bout of pancreatitis. I suggest you continue with the 12 tablespoons and then speak to your vet tomorrow about how you should proceed. She won't starve, I promise!

can Protease IFC (enzymes & vits), zylkene, and probiotic be given to a small dog recovering from pancreatitis and who only eats fish & currently refuses to eat the incorporated Dr. Harveys raw vibrance.
I have no experience with Protease IFC, and I would recommend discussing it's use with the vet that diagnosed Sofia with pancreatitis. Zylkene and probiotics are fine - if you break open the Zylkene capsule, it can be sprinkled on food and may make it taste better. Personally, I am not a fan of raw diets, but at this point, it is most important to find an easily digestible, low fat food that Sofia is interested in eating. Prescription options like Hill's i/d are available through your vet. Otherwise boiled chicken breast, cooked white rice, plain toast, chicken broth, or fish broth are reasonable options.

If she is on medications that were prescribed by your veterinarian for treatment of pancreatitis, then yes she should continue to receive her medications as long as she is eating. Pancreatitis is generally a painful condition so it is recommended to ensure that she receives pain control medications while her pancreas improves. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear that Max is having this issue. You can try feeding anything bland like: * rice - white or brown * cooked plain pasta * scrambled eggs * bread * turkey NO butter, spices, etc. on any of the food. If you want to flavor it you can put some low-sodium chicken broth over it. If he won't stay still for you to use the feeding tube I suggest you get someone (or a couple people) to help you. Back him into a corner, make him sit, you stand over him like if you were going to "ride" him, have another person kneel directly in front of him to prevent him from moving forward and you put the nutrition through the feeding tube. Push the liquid slowly and make sure it is room temperature. It is very uncomfortable for them for you to push it quickly or for it to be too cold or too hot so that may be why he is adverse to it.
