My senior cat is suddenly favoring a back leg. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

My cat is favoring his back leg all of a sudden. It started this evening. Unknown cause. He is bearing some weight, walk some but quickly lays down. He is purring, not crying, no rapid breathing. He is able to jump on couch and back down. I am able to rub, tough, squeeze and stretch back leg that he is favoring. He is around 15 years old and has never done this before. Should I be concerned?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Hobo. Poor boy. Favoring the leg means he is in pain. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Keep him indoors if he is allowed outside, and limit his movements to a small room. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I hope this helps!
