My dog has pancreatitis. What bland food can I give her if she won't eat rice?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 17 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with pancreatitis on the 14th. She has since finished all her antibiotics but isn’t digesting her normal Iams dog food well. I had her fast for the last 24hours after vomiting but I’m curious what I should feed her. Some websites say pasta cooked down some say rice I’ve tried rice and she didn’t like it. Should I try pasta or potatoes maybe?

I'm sorry to hear that Fiona is dealing with pancreatitis. As Dr. Elizabeth mentioned, there are several low fat prescription diets on the market that can be helpful for longterm use. However, while you're dealing with this current vomiting issue, I agree that a homemade bland diet is perfectly reasonable. Since Fiona won't eat the rice, you can certainly try other starchy options. Plain potatoes or pasta are perfectly reasonable options, provided that you don't season them or use any butter or oil. Just be sure to mix them with a lean protein source, such as boiled chicken breast. The goal with any bland diet is to keep it as low in fat and simple as possible. If her vomiting continues, certainly have her rechecked by her veterinarian. I hope that she feels better soon!

    Hello and thank you for your questions. I hate to hear Fiona is dealing with pancreatitis. This can be very troublesome for some dogs. For right now if she has an upset tummy, I recommend a bland diet. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Long term, since this is a possible second occurrence with a short time span, I recommend to feed one of the prescription diets specifically for pets who are prone to pancreatitis. Royal Canin has a diet called Low Fat. It only contains 7% fat which is the lowest on the market. If Fiona is not feeling better by tomorrow, I recommend to have her examined. It is very important to treat pancreatitis early and aggressively. I hope Fiona starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

    I would suggest to try to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence.
