My dog's anal glands are irritated. She's scooting. Is Glandex safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

I have been expressing my dogs anal glands weekly. I have noticed the her anus has turned darker, blackened and the skin around it looks tougher. She has scooter on the carpet a couple times. I am worried her anal glands have atrophied bc they aren’t expressing anything anymore. Also, her glands feel bulgier/bigger than normal. She is a 10 lbs Pomchi. Any supplements you recommend? What about those Glandex chews peanut butter flavored? Are they dangerous? Do you think she is impacted? Go to vet?

Hello. The darkened skin is just an indication that there has been some chronic irritation & this can certainly go along with the itching & scooting that goes along with anal gland problems. Anal glands do not atrophy, so by expressing them every week ( which I really do not recommend you continue to do ), I am sure they are now completely empty for the time being. Some people have found Glandex to be helpful. There is absolutely nothing dangerous about trying this & seeing if it is helpful for Tuti. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
