My 11-year-old dog has a gallbladder mass. Is surgery worth the cost?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | 11 years and 4 months old | 45 lbs

my 11 year old mini Australian Sheppard was recently sick - spent two days on IV and antibiotics - got better, but was told to have an ultrasound down to see why - turns out she has a mass on her gallbladder - tried to test it, but it came back inconclusive. Took her to med vet for a surgery consult . They can not determine if from gallbladder to liver or liver to gallbladder and wont know till they get in there. cost could be anywhere from 3,400 to to 5,700 plus depending on what they find.

Hello. I am so sorry for this diagnosis. Diagnostic tests are often very helpful, but sometimes you need to get an actual biopsy to really tell what is going on, & nothing is a substitute for a surgeon getting his eyes on a situation. Yes, it is expensive, a scary to think about surgery, but If this is something really serious, & there is a possibility that surgery can be at least partially curative, then you may have many good years with her. You might want to check out Care Credit ( https://carecredit.com ) which is a medical credit charge that can has some favorable rates to pay off an expensive procedure. I know whatever you decide, it will be best for you & Baylee. Good luck & thanks for contacting PetCoach.
