My dog has a hole on her back from a botfly. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 23 days old | 25 lbs

We think a cuterebra might have attached to Arya. We were brushing her and noticed some blood and a lump on her back. We removed it and now there is a rather large hole on her back with some white substance. Do you recommend we take her to the emergency room? Or what should we do? Thank you.

Unless she is painful or lethargic, it can likely wait until the morning. Place an e-collar (cone) or a small t-shirt on her to prevent scratching, rubbing or licking. Do not squeeze or press the area. If you don't think she can wait, then by all meas have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER. If it is a cuterebra, it will need to be removed. If not, the wound will be cleaned and she will likely go home with antibiotics and pain medication (if indicated).
