My cat has pink chin swelling & black spots. Is it acne? What to do?

Is this cat acne? What can I do? My cat suddenly developed pink swelling around her mouth and chin, and it has black spots.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about C and for providing pictures, they are very helpful! Yes, this could be feline acne, but I can't say for certain without seeing her in person. I'd take her into the vet in the morning to get this diagnosed. If she does have feline acne, the vet can prescribe a medicated wash to treat it. I would also change her food and water bowls from plastic to metal, as plastic bowls exacerbate feline acne. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Tootie! It looks like chine acne to me. I recommend a novel protein diet. Chicken is the most common protein allergen so try to get venison, salmon or duck. There are also prescription options. I would make sure all his water and food bowels are stainless steel are are cleaned daily. She likely needs several weeks of an antibiotic, since she is hard to pill ask your Vet about Convenia, which is a 2 week injectable antibiotic. The topical I recommend is pyoben but it has been on back order for a year or so. Instead look for a 2-3% benzoyl peroxide shampoo and clean his chin every other day. This shampoo can be found online and likely at your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Tootie the best!

How can I tell if my cat has ringworm or cat acne?
The black spots on your cats chin is chin acne. I would recommend making sure your cat is drinking out of stainless steel or ceramic bowls and that they are cleaned at least once a day. I would also keep their chin clean and dry. If the acne gets worse they may need antibiotics from your vet. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. It’s difficult to tell for sure from the picture, but it seems the front part of Emma’s chin may be swollen. This is common in cats with feline acne. Sometimes it indicates a secondary infection, so I recommend having Emma seen by your vet. If needed, they will be able to prescribe antibiotics, and many cats improve using medicated wipes to keep the area clean. Make sure you use clean metal or ceramic bowls for Emma’s food and water, as some cats can get this as a reaction to plastic. Hope this helps!

I believe my cat has chin acne. Can I do anything to treat her at home or should we head to the vet? She will be 14 in May and does have irritable bowel which flares up every now and then.

You should head to the vet to get it definitely diagnosed, and the vet can prescribe a medicated wash. At home, use glass or metal bowls for her food and water, as plastic ones hold bacteria and aggravate the acne. I'd see if you can get into a vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!

Storm has a red patch under his chin. Thought it might be food so I tried to clean it off with a pet wipe and he kept growling at me. Is it possible its a scab or sonething else?
This looks like chin acne or a mild abrasion that is getting infected. I would wipe it with an acne pad if he’ll let you, or clean it with some hydrogen peroxide. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. From the photo this looks like it should heal in a week or so. If not then bring him in to your veterinarian for treatment. Some cats get chin acne from eating out of a plastic bowl so switch to a metal or ceramic bowl. Also taking a warm damp cloth and wiping the area after he eats will help this clear up more quickly. It looks like feline chin acne. If he eats from plastic bowls, switch them out for glass, steel or ceramic bowls. Some cats are allergic to plastic. You can clean his chin twice daily with a Stridex acne pad (NOT the kind with salicylic acid, but the kind with benzoyl peroxide), or you can use a cotton ball with regular hydrogen peroxide to clean his chin. If it does not improve significantly in a few days or gets worse, please get him in to see your vet as this could indicate a more serious condition.

This is chin acne. I recommend cleaning the area and making sure she is eating and drinking out of ceramic or stainless steel bowls. Plastic bowls collect bacteria and when cats eat out of them the bacteria gets into their skin creating acne. Severe chin acne should be treated with antibiotics. You should use a plate for Fluffy’s food and clean it frequently since oils from food or a reaction to plastic bowls can lead to acne. Occasionally medicated benzoyl peroxide wipes or ointments like mupirocin are needed to help with acne. Depression shouldn’t be related and can be a sign of a number of diseases so if it continues and you’re concerned your should see a veterinarian.

It looks like my cat has very swollen “cat acne” under his chin that has gotten much worse over the past week. What should I do to help it go away? Should I use any specific methods or treatments?
In this case (severe) of feline acne a check up would be absolutely needed as antibiotics are required. Anti-septic shampoos are required as well like benzoyl peroxide facial preparation or an antiseborrheic shampoo. Mupirocin ointment is highly effective in many cases.
