Why is my dog constantly licking her swollen leg and limping?

Hi my dog has been licking her leg for two days and know it is swollen and she can't put pressure on it

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Pandora and for providing pictures of her paw. They are very helpful. I certainly see swelling in the pictures, especially of one of her toes. It may be infected or broken. If she can't put pressure on her leg, that means she is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet immediately. The vet will likely want to do x-rays of her paw to see what is going on, and can give her pain medication. I hope this helps!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Sunny may be licking his paw due to trauma or a wound that is painful - dogs can sometimes have pieces of grass or small twigs stuck between the toes. Infections or allergic reactions can also occur on the feet, either to a cleaning agent or certain foods. I recommend having Sunny seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine exactly what is going on, especially because he seems uncomfortable. His vet may recommend topical or oral antibiotics, foot soaks, or a diet change. I hope all is well!

My dogs paw is swollen, I'm going to take him to vet tomorrow but is there anything I can give him for the pain? I'm worried he will keep licking at it until I return from work to take him to the vet.
Human over the counter pain medications can be toxic to dogs so do not give her any. She will need a prescription pain medication made for dogs. If she is bothering the leg than you could get an E-collar at a pet store to prevent her from licking the leg while you are at work. Otherwise, call your vet and see if you could drop her off in the morning on the way to work and have them examine/treat her leg and keep her for the day.

She woke up this morning wining and wouldn’t walk on her right leg. I pressed on it and it didn’t bother her but it’s a little swollen above her paw. I found I can buy dog aspirin
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. When dogs are 'non-ambulatory'- not walking on a leg, this is usually a sign of significant pain. Also, swelling is concerning for either a significant injury (fracture/dislocation), an infection or abscess (pocket of pus), or in older animals we worry about cancers. I would recommend having Swayde seen by a vet to see if anything serious is going on, and would recommend x-rays. Best of luck with Swayde.

I am very sorry to hear that Gab is having trouble with her leg and limping, I am sure it is worrying for you both. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why a dog may limp, ranging from injury, infection, osteoarthritis, disorders of the growing bones or joints, and even some cancers. She may be licking at the paw because it hurts, or there is something inside of it such as a migrating grass seed. Signs of infection in a paw would include redness, swelling, and discharge. Gab would also likely have a fever. A veterinarian will also be able to make Gab comfortable by providing pain relief medication. The vet may also perform an orthopaedic exam and an X-ray. There can be many things causing the swelling and pain in her paw, including infection, broken toe bone, soft tissue sprain, or torn ligaments. I would recommend that Lexi get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. The vet will do a thorough exam, and may recommend x-rays. Then appropriate medications for pain can be prescribed. In the meantime, try to limit her activity. You can also use an ice-pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes at a time to help with pain and swelling. Unfortunately, there are no OTC human pain medications that would be safe to use in Lexi.

Recent inflammation to my dogs right toe. He’s been licking on it and has favored it quite a bit over the past 48hours. Thoughts on what this could be?
Thank you for the picture of Jameson's toe, it's very helpful. It looks quite red and swollen in the picture. There are a number of things that could cause this, such as a foreign body like a foxtail, an infection, an injury, or even a cancerous growth. He's licking it a lot and favoring it because it's painful to him. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He needs to see a vet to have this diagnosed and treated, and I would give his vet a call now to get him an appointment. It would be best for him to see his vet asap. I would also put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it, you can buy one at a pet store if you don't have one at home already. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. I’m sorry to hear about Sugar. This could be a number of things including snake bite, bee sting, broken toe/foot, or abscess. I’d recommend seeing your vet as soon as possible for a better diagnosis and the proper treatment. Tonight is ideal. If the swelling continues up the leg or Sugar becomes lethargic, has tremors, or any other worrisome signs, please see an emergency vet immediately. Otherwise, I recommend the following until you can get in tomorrow. Ice- apply an ice pack or frozen veggie bag wrappped in a paper towel or thin cloth. Apply for 5-10 mins every 2-4 hours. This does wonders for both pain and swelling. Epsom salt soak- mix 4 tbsp Epsom salts in 1 cup warm water. Soak his paw in this tonight. This helps with pain, swelling, and if there is something stuck (stinger, thorn, etc). I absolutely do NOT recommend any human pain medications as they are neither safe, nor very effective in animals. They may also interfere with the pain

Maddie's leg looks very swollen, and the fact that she is limping indicates that she is likely in a lot of pain. Please make an appointment to have Maddie seen by a veterinarian. Causes of the limping could be a muscular or nerve injury, a fractured bone, or a foreign body embedded in the leg. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Maddie without consulting with your vet. You can call and ask what the cost of the exam and consultation will be prior to going in to your vet, and plan accordingly.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. You are absolutely correct that there are many causes for this. If she is uncomfortable with the legs that have edema, I would recommend trying gently massage the legs to help move the fluid and periodically rotate her so that she is not just laying on one side only for a long period of time. If you can get to the vet sooner rather than later, that will help speed up a potential diagnosis and treatment for her. I would recommend that she have a full blood panel run to start with. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching.
