My 6-month Bernese Mountain Dog is limping and yelping. Is it elbow dysplasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 4 days old | 40 lbs

We adopted a six month old Bernese mountain dog who has over a period of three days been limping with her front left paw she now yelps when she tries to stand up. Today she is slightly better and putting more pressure on her paw but still in pain and just laying around. I read about elbow dysplasia and I’m curious if this is the reason for her limping she has been very active with another dog that lives near us but no injuries to her at all.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Jelly Bean. Poor girl! Limping means she is in pain, and it could be from elbow dysplasia. You can see signs of it in the dog as early as 5 months of age. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and are fatal if given. I'd take her into the vet today to get her pain medication and to have x-rays done of her elbow. I hope this helps!
