My dog has a long toenail. Is it causing her recent leg pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 75 lbs

My dog has one long gnarly claw. She hurt her leg running a few weeks ago and I’m worried that the claw is problematic or is it just a long ugly toe nail?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Meatball. Her toenail looks like it just needs to be trimmed back. Unless it is split or broken somewhere that I can't see from the picture, it is unlikely related to her recent bout of lameness. If she is seems to have problems with that limb after trimming her nails, then she see needs to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
