New 6-week-old kitten: Does he need formula or is he too young?

Hi, I have adopted a 6 week old kitten. He ate a little of wet kitten food, used the litter box, has been purring and lightly playing. My concern is that if he should be on formula? If he is too you g to have been adopted out? I just want to do what’s best for him.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Gaiman. Congrats on your new kitten! At six weeks of age, he will be fully weaned and does not need formula. Keep feeding him the wet kitten food, and you can start introducing small amounts of dry kitten for him as well. Give him the same brand of dry food as the wet food. He is not too young to be adopted out. I would consider six weeks the minimum age to be adopted out. I hope this helps!

Good for you for taking in Lil' Homie and his brother! Looking at the picture, I'm roughly estimating that he's likely close to 6 weeks old. However, it's impossible for me to be more accurate in my guesstimate without knowing his body weight and checking out his teeth. With that in mind, by the time kittens are 6 weeks old, it's perfectly fine if they only eat solid food - including dry kibble. Some cats simply don't like wet food for one reason or another. If Lil' Homie is willing to eat dry food, continue to offer it plain several times per day. He should eat around 1/3 to 1/2 cup of dry food alone per day, but this volume changes a bit depending on the specific variety of food. You can also put some kitten formula in a bowl for him to drink, as well as continuing to offer canned kitten food. If he's eating a good bit of dry food, he won't also need the formula or canned food. If you're concerned that he isn't willing to eat enough of the dry food, you could also try adding a bit o

Hello. It makes a bit of a difference if your kitten is 4 weeks or 8 weeks of age. At 4 weeks, you can offer food 4 times a day & allow the kitten to eat as much as she wants in a 10-15 minute period of time. At 8 weeks of age, you can leave dry food out all day as most cats do like to nibble throughout the day. You can absolutely mix the dry & the formula together but by 8 weeks of age, I would stop the formula & just use the dry food. You can also offer canned kitten food several times a day, too if you wish. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My friends cat birthed 4 kittens that are 5 weeks old. The mother is ~10 months old and underweight/malnourished. One kitten has an eye infection, another has mustard colored poop - the mom is also eating it. All the animals in the house have flees.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! In this case, it would be best to have him removed. You can continue nursing him with kitten formula until he is about 6-7 weeks old at which point you may switch him to a kibble or canned food diet. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian who can check him and see if he needs any therapy and they can then recommend a preventative plan including vaccines. Best of luck!

Hi, it looks like you're offering both canned and dry food which is great. Little kittens don't eat very much, so maybe he is just full. He may also have parasites like intestinal worms which make him feel full. If he doesnt eat tomorrow, you should take him in to a vet. Good for you for adopting him.

At 6 weeks they are old enough to be weaned. You can started with dry kitten food mixed with a little water and canned food to entice them. If they eat well, then you can decrease the amount of canned food and water until they are eating dry food. The mom will also help by letting them nurse less and less. Once they are eating a good meal 3-4 times a day, they do no need any milk from mom and go to a new home.

I’m feeding a six week old kitten moist food through a syringe, because it won’t eat, but will drink water out of bowl, how much do I feed her at a time and how many times a day.
At six weeks of age, it's time for Heavenly to start eating a kitten formulated food. Because she will drink water out of a bowl, she can eat food out of a bowl and you do not need to syringe feed her. I can give you a method to wean her onto dry food. To help her wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry kitten food only. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! In terms of food, she should be fed kitten formula until she is about 6-7 weeks old at which point she can be switched to a dry or canned diet. It is important to get her evaluated by a veterinarian to get her on a preventative care protocol to include vaccines and deworming when she turns 6-8 weeks old. She is beautiful! Have a great day!
