How much Hills Science Diet to feed my obese cat for 330 calories?

Today I went to the vet and they told me the cat I adopted is obese. He needs to lose weight by eating 330 calories a day, however I have no idea how much that is. I feed him the Hills Science Diet for Sensitive Stomachs. I would really appreciate help on this matter. Thank you.

I would be glad to help you! The food is 524 calories per cup. To get 330 calories a day, you should feed him just under 2/3 of a cup daily. Divide this 2/3 cup into two equal portions to feed him once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps!

Getting cats to lose weight can be tough. I recommend to feed a low calorie diet cat food such as Royal Canin or Hill Science diet. Feed 3/4 -1 cup of food per day and divid it into 4-6 small meals. You can also purchase a treat ball online and feed your cat through that method. He will have to roll the ball around in order to get food which will help him to burn calories. Keep in mind that weigh loss must be slow in cats or they can damage the liver so make sure things are slow and gradual. Best of luck!

Thank you for submitting your question! Most indoor cats tend to be a bit over weight as a result of plenty of food and little exercise. First off, encourage plenty of play time. You can feed them on elevated surfaces so they have to jump up to get a meal. You can also hide kibble around the house (out of their pre-measured daily amount) to engage them in their natural hunting behavior. This is mentally stimulating for them and encourages more exercise. Science Diet is a high quality food and would be a good choice for them. I do not typically recommend grain free formulas as they are high in carbohydrates and result in weight gain. Measure the food daily for each cat and feed them separately (several small meals throughout the day). This way you will how much each cat is receiving. Lastly, feed them less than recommended for their weight bracket since they are both overweight. Good luck!

Hello, depending on her lifestyle, indoor only cats should be fed atleast twice daily. This can be a variety of dry and wet food and should not exceed more than 1 cup of dry food per day or more than 1 can per day. There may be differences depending on how many calories each food contains so it is hard to determine this. Your kitten should be consuming around 201 Kcal per day. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi and thanks for posting! For Easel who is a spayed adult cat, she'll need about 220-250 calories a day to maintain her current weight and between 180-200 if she needs to lose weight. Every food can and product bag contain the calories per cup or calories per can on the label which you can use to adjust her cups per day accordingly. I hope this helps!

Great job trying to help bear get to his ideal weight! Here is the link to the feeding guide for the adult perfect weight formula from Hills science diet website : https://www.hillspet.com/cat-food/sd-adult-perfect-weight-liver-and-chicken-entree-cat-food-canned I would start maybe by feeding 3 cans per day. 1 in the morning , 1 in afternoon, and 1 in evening. Or 1.5 cans twice daily. Then weigh him in 3-4 weeks and adjust the amount you are feeding from there. (If he s not starting to loose weight you may need to decrease to 2.5 cans for example) This is provided you are exclusively feeding him the canned food (ie no dry food also available). Good luck!! My cat is on a diet (two meals per day, I feed her the required amounts of food of her ideal weight) plus she is exercising. She doesn't seem to be losing weight. What do I do?
That's tough because cats hate exercising so you really have to make then adhere to a strict diet. First off make sure that you are feeding based on the resting energy requirement which can be calculated by the following equation: 30 x body weight (kg) + 70 Which gives you the number of kcals required per day. Then you need to look at the food and figure out how many kcal are in a can or cup. Once you figure that how you should be able to calculate amount to be fed per day. For an average cat: 30 x 5kg + 70=220 kcal If the food contains 315kcal/cup, 220/315=0.69 cups or about 2/3 of a cup. Also, the science diet metabolic diet is great for weight loss.

I have an overweight cat 14lbs. I'm confused by food labels as they read like such: calorie content 1197 kcal/kg. 102kcal/can. Does this mean 1 can is 102 calories?
Food labels can be extremely confusing! The 1197 kcal/kg is a calculation of calories on a "dry matter" basis, which allows you to easily compare a compatible calorie count between different brands and types (wet or dry) of foods. Since canned foods have a very high water content, there is a much lower calorie count per can. To answer your question, yes, this means that there are 102 calories per can of food. Your vet will help you to determine Kitty's ideal body weight so that you can appropriately feed her for your weight loss goals. I hope this helps!

Somehow this makes no sense, especially since you are mixing kcal and cal. Feed your kitty 3- 4 times a day (to be able to eat as much as necessary). Since a cat needs approximately 30cal/lb per day to maintain weight, her daily need to maintain the weight would be 150 cal. Your vet recommends 180 cal (not 1800), so she would need 1 2/3 cans of Merrick per day, ie split in 3-4 feed portions.

Check the labels on your cat foods and see if it gives you a calorie count. Most good pet foods will have that information. Calculate how many calories are in 1/3 of the dry food and compare that amount to the canned food to get an idea of the right amount to feed him to maintain his weight. If you aren't fond of math (like me!) a less precise method is to simply keep an eye on his weight and adjust the amount you feed accordingly. When you run your hands over his body, if the ribs can be felt with light pressure then he's a good weight. If you have to really feel around to tell where his ribs are, he could lose a little weight, and if the bones are felt with no pressure at all, he should get fed a little more.

Ideally, this is based on your veterinarian's recommendations on how much to cut back which is based on how much she weighs and the kind of food she eats. Another alternative, is feeding her a weight loss diet that works great called Hill's Science Diet metabolic weight management diet. This is something you can buy online or at your local pet store.
