My dog has severe skin ulcers. What's causing them and how to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 9 years and 1 month old | 96 lbs

Dear, My dog (Labrador, 9yrs, male) has a severe skin inflammation. Multiple skin ulcers on legs and back, which after several days joins together creating a 5-6cm skin inflammation. My doctor said that is must be Wall barley, but we have never found even one in surgery. I am not a doctor, but I suspect on "staphylococcus aureus". I have successfully healed face ulcers with med.cream: 0,5mg/g+1mg/g+10mg/g Betamethasone, Gentamicin, Clotrimazole I hope that you could help me.

Hello. When you say Wall Barley, are you talking about a Warble? This is a fly larvae that is laid by a fly in a scratch or cut in the skin. It does not present as you describe. If your ointment seems to be helping, then continue this. It is a good combination of a steroid, antibiotic & fungal medication. If the lesions continue to reoccur, you may need to have a biopsy of the skin & active lesions to diagnose the underlying problem. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
