My cat attacked another. Can cats seriously injure or kill each other?

Can a cat kill another cat? Our neighbor's cat was in our yard and one of our cats got out and went after him. Our cat had him pinned to the ground so he could not get away and ripped hair out of him. It looked like he would have killed him if I had not broken it up.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats often fight and can inflict serious wounds but I have never come across situation when a cat killed another cat. In my opinion, it is not impossible but very unlikely.
