Rescued dog has fleas and is itching. What can I do before the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | unspayed | 6 years old | 10 lbs

Hello. I just rescued a dog. She is really bothered by fleas. I can't see my vet until Friday to get pet meds and flea treatment. Is there anything I can do to provide her some relief from itching? I have seen a couple fleas. I pulled them off. She is still biting her skin alot. Thank you

Flea allergies from bites can definitely cause excessive itching. Making sure Penny can't bite or scratch at the areas with the use of an Elizabethan (cone) collar or a T-shirt over the area is a good idea to help prevent further irritation which can lead to increased itching (it will also protect the areas from getting irritated or causing secondary infections). If you don't have access to a flea medication currently, a bath with Dawn dish soap and brushing with a flea comb can help kill and then remove any remaining fleas that could be causing issues. Keeping her bedding and the surrounding area clean and vacuumed can also help to reduce the number of fleas in the area that may jump back on her.
