My cat won't eat, is hiding, and sick. Does he need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

My adult cat is not himself at all today and I can tell that he is feeling badly. Since this morning he has been smacking his lips, has not eaten and is hiding. He acts like he wants to throw up but within a millisecond will stop any effort. I did notice a couple of days ago he was straining to meow. Today he has refused treats and dry food. Is this something that will pass? Would Pepcid help? Do you feel I need to take him to the emergency vet?

I'm sorry poor Latte is sick. It's actually very serious when a cat won't eat, as if they go long enough without eating, they will develop a fatty liver that is fatal without treatment. I think it's best you take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

This is a medical emergency, and he has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
