My cat is breathing hard with a raspy sound. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed

My cat is 5 years old and has been hacking for days with no vomit or hairballs. Today in the middle of the night I noticed she had a raspy sound to her breathing and sometimes it's a long raspy breath sound, which has never happened. I could see her breathing hard even though she has been resting and not playing. What could this possibly mean? Should I take her to the vet?

Poor Faith. She could have a severe respiratory infection. Yes, I would definitely take her into the vet, as she sounds quite sick. I'd take her into a vet first thing in the morning. I hope this helps!
