My dog had a growth removed. Why is he still limping after surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 1.66 lbs

Groot (M/1yr/Beasky) had a growth right above his carpal pad on the left front leg. The local vet recommended to remove it via surgery. On Friday, May 29, 2020 - we took him in. The vet mentioned that the growth seemed deep & entire dew claw & carpal pad was removed, with 3 sutures. The biopsy report hasn't arrived but the lab person informed me that it is a case of Mastocytoma. It's been 9 days but Groot is still limping (bandage changed twice). Is this normal? Is there threat to his mobility?

I would make sure his pain is adequately controlled and the margins of the biopsy were clean. You may want to have x-rays performed to ensure there is no abnormality to the underlying bone or joints.
