My dog drags her paws, has worn nails, exposed quick. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

Mimi drags her feet when she walks and her nails have become very worn down. I noticed the nerve was starting to show today. She doesn’t seem very painful but she has been licking the foot.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mimi. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. There is typically a reason that the dog will drag her paws such as arthritis or a neurological problem. Her nails are getting worn to the quick which can result in bleeding. I suspect it is actually painful if she is licking them. In the meantime, she may need to wear dog booties to protect her nails on walks. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
