My cat ate a bird, threw up, now stopped meowing. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 15 lbs

Hello! Three days ago my cat ate a half of a baby bird, then threw it up - bones and all. Since then, his meow first became very deep as opposed to his usual high-pitched meow and now, he’s stopped meowing at all, which is very unusual for him. He is still eating and drinking but is not as active as usual. Should I take him to the vet? Is there some troubleshooting I should be trying first? He doesn’t visually seem to be in pain.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I suspect Seuss has a scratch or wound to the throat from eating and vomiting the bones. That will often stop cats from meowing and purring. If his is fine in himself, you should just monitor him for a few days at home. He should be back to normal after the weekend, but if you notice signs of gagging, retching or lack of appetite, you should get him checked by your local vets.
