My cat has yellow, soupy diarrhea for 4 days. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

My cat has had diarrhea for the last 4 days. It started shortly after this last vet visit, which was for his ears. I believed he had ear mites, but he tested negative. He likely has a yeast or other bacteria in his ears, which I am cleaning daily. My other cats have the same ear issue, but no diarrhea. The diarrhea is yellow in color and soupy. I’m not sure if maybe he ate something outside (he went outside the day this started) but this has been going on for days now.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Tommy. This diarrhea could be due to a stomach illness, eating something rotten, a sudden change in diet, intestinal worms, or a foreign body. Because he's had it for four days, the time for a home remedy has passed. You need to take him into the vet to have this treated, and I would take him in first thing into morning. I hope this helps!
