How to help my cat's fence wound heal and prevent infection?

Hi, I think my cat got caught in a wired fence and came back home with an ugly wound. I took her to the vet and he cleaned it up and gave me a mild skin lotion without alcohol asking me to use it 3 times a day keeping the skin humid. I will appreciate it very much if you could please give your opinion if there's anything additional that I can do. Thanking you in advance I send you my sincere wishes. Mehmet Celal Yahyabeyoglu

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Boncuk. Poor girl, that looks awful. I would put a cone on her head so she cannot lick the wounds. You can get one from the vet if you do not have one already. I would keep her indoors at all times during the next 2 weeks to enable her to heal. Do not let her outside at all. Keep the wound area clean and dry, and monitor for signs of infection. If you see pus, swelling, warmth to the touch, she's lethargic, or has a loss of appetite, take her back into the vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Stormy! I would shave the fur away from the wound then clean it well with water and a mild soap (avoid hydrogen peroxide). Then apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The most important thing is to have Stormy wear and E-collar to prevent licking and keep him indoors. He should see a Vet as soon as possible to at a minimum get antibiotics but to also see if surgery is required to close the wound. I would call your local SPCA to see if they offer a low cost Veterinary clinic. I hope this helps and I wish Stormy a speedy recovery!

My cat was spayed yesterday and wont stop licking her incision. It looks open just a little and a little bit wet like it could be infected. Should i take her back to the vet???
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. The incision does not look infected now, but if she does not leave it alone, she could open things up. She will probably need to wear a protective cone for a couple of days to allow healing. For tonight, if you have an infant T shirt, or a stretched out tube sock, you can make a little body jacket for her. She may not be too happy with this, but it will definitely take her mind off her incision. Have your vet take a look at the incision tomorrow. He may also have a product you can put around the incision with a yucky taste to stop the licking. Good luck & take care.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Cats are miraculous healers. The leg could just be sore. I would worry about an abscess forming from the bite. Abscesses required opening them up and antibiotics. The only thing you can do is clean the wounds twice daily with warm water and a mild soap and warm compress the wounds after each cleaning for the next 3-5 days. I wish you the best!

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. First of all, you need to stop Biscuit from licking the wounds. Head cone usually works best. You should clean the wounds with warm, boiled water twice a day until they scab up. If Biscuit becomes lethargic, off food or you notice that the wounds are hot to touch, painful or swollen, you will need to take her to your local vets.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It looks like a deep, inflamed wound. Antibiotic ointment may not by enough to treat it and Collic possibly will need a course of antibiotic in form of tablets to get back to normal. I would recommend Collic to be checked over by your local vets to fully assess the wound and to recommend the best treatment option.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Callie! Any non-healing wound is best to be evaluated by a Vet. It is ideal to find out why Callie is so itchy, is it fleas, allergies, etc. The first step in getting the area to heal is to stop the scratching, use antibiotics if infected and keep Callie from scratching it. Get an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut. You can clean the area once to twice daily with warm water and a mild soap and then apply a triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. Keep the cone on until the wound is completely healed. If it heals and you take the cone off and she scratches enough to break open the skin again you need to take her to the Vet. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Henny! I recommend using an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent licking. Constantly licking will delay healing. She may need antibiotics but it's hard to know with out seeing a picture. You can try putting Mupirocin ointment on twice daily. Clean it with a wet warm cloth and a gentle soap twice daily. Hello. If you have or can purchase a skin antiseptic, one with either 2% chlorhexidine or 1% povidine iodine, then you can gently clean this 2 times daily. Antibiotics would hasten healing, & if the wound is not looking better by early next week, I would consider a veterinary visit. But by keeping this clean, it will heal, & yes, this has the look of a typical cat bite abscess, so he did get into an argument with another cat. Thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Lilly! Is the wound right by his penis? If so that is a very hard location to bandage without covering his penis. The skin around the wound is very swollen and red. i am concerned about an abscess or a warble/cuterebra, which is a fly larvae under the skin. I recommend that you take him to the Vet Monday to have the area evaluated and to start antibiotics. Otherwise he needs an E-collar or cone to prevent licking. Good luck!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. It appears Precious may have sustained an abscess, probably from a fight with another cat. The abscess ruptured, & Precious has been licking the area to keep it clean. Her sandpaper tongue can actually cause more trauma to the area. You can clean the area with a little warm water & a disinfectant such as Betadine, & you may need to put an elizabethean collar on her to stop the licking. These type wounds do not always need antibiotics, but it would not be a bad idea to let your vet have a look at it just to make sure . Hope she well very soon.
