Why is my indoor cat biting her leg in one spot after being outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Chartreux | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

our female cat, 4 y/o, is an indoor pet. We got her from ASPCA 2 years ago. She got outside a month ago for about an hour and when she came in she was visibly shaken/upset, but no visible physical injuries. A few weeks after, she began biting at her leg and continue to bite right down to her skin in that one area! It's just in that one spot on her leg. She eats fine, same cat food as always, fine in every other way except this biting on her leg!

Hello. The last time I saw a situation like this, we x-rayed the leg & saw a BB shot pellet ( & no, these little shot pellets of leave no or a very tiny wound ). Once removed, the chronic irritation & infection completely cleared up. So get this x-rayed to see if something is indeed there. If not, it could be some other foreign material that may respond well to antibiotics. Good luck & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
