What causes brown, gooey eye discharge in my cats? Is it an infection?

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My cat bluebell often has eye boogers and it looks like she is crying sometimes. I then try and gently wipe her eye and its just clear liquid but around the corner its brown and smiley like a non-solid eye booger. Now my cat Penelope has begun to do the same thing. I dont know if this is a bad thing?

Poor Penelope and Bluebell. I'm wondering if they have an eye infection. Any eye problem should be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take them into a vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!

    It sounds like Shelby could have an eye infection. This needs to be checked out by a vet today or tomorrow. Any eye problem has to be examined by a vet promptly because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I hope this helps.

This is probably an upper respiratory infection. it's very common in young cats and is very contagious to other cats as well. It is treated with antibiotic eye drops/ointment and oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. if left untreated many cats will end up blind or even die from the disease. This could be caused by either allergies or a virus that is affecting all the cats. If the problem is self resolving and not causing any other issues (like anorexia or lethargy) then I would not worry about it too much. If, however, it seems like your cats are ill, not wanting to eat, etc, then you should consider taking them to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Brown discharge often indicates infection or a corneal scratch. From the photo, the right eye appears blue which can indicate significant injury or corneal dystrophy (I;m not sure rather if this is an old issue or is recent). I recommend to play it safe and have J examined by the veterinarian. He should also wear an elizabethan collar to prevent rubbing the eye which could cause further injury. I hope this helps.

My six you old cat has been having redish brown discharge from her eyes recently. She doesn't seem sick but I'm still worried. She's also not that active and I was wondering if that's normal.
No, this is not normal at all, and it could be that Bibi Noor has an eye infection or could have injured her eye. Any problem with the eye should be seen by a vet asap as leaving it untreated can and does lead to vision loss. It seems that my cats eye (I guess where the tear duct is located) is slightly larger and she has like a brownish green eye boogie. What should I do?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Trinidad. The most likely cause is an upper respiratory virus/organism infecting the inner part of the eyelids called the conjunctiva. There are a few viruses that cause this in addition to a few bacteria. Herpes virus, calicivirus, chlamydia, and mycoplasma are just a few of the organisms that can cause this in cats/kittens. These organisms are NOT contagious to people but are contagious to other cats. Kittens get infected by their mom and many of them become chronic carriers of the viruses. Once the infection takes hold and damages the conjunctiva, a secondary bacterial infection can take hold which often is noticed by a green/yellow eye discharge. Other signs can include those similar to a common cold in people- sneezing, runny nose, coughing, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, etc. The other possibilities for this include a tear duct problem, injury to the eye, etc. Your vet can take a detailed history, examine Tr

Oh no, this isn't good! Nibs could have a severe eye infection or could has suffered trauma to her eye. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Nibs needs to see a vet now to have her eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. My kitten has clearing brown discharge coming out of only one eye. He can barely open that one eye.
I can see excessive discharge in the right eye and the eye is not as open as the left one. These signs indicate something abnormal and as always with eyes I would recommend to have the eye examined by a vet. The vet will examine the different parts of the eye and make sure no foreign material present as well as stain the eye to evaluate the cornea. What can I treat with? She has eye discharge.
It looks as Lizzie is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in cats. you will need to take her to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.
