My dog is vomiting and shaking. Could it be from a raisin he ate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

My 17 pound jack Russell ate one raisin on Monday. Took him to vet and had blood work came back normal. Then on Friday he vomited 9 times. They gave him anti nausea shot and sent him home. Any idea what’s going on? Is he okay? He’s shaking.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It would be extremely unlikely that the vomiting on Friday is related to raisin ingestion on Monday. It was a very small amount of raisins that Bubba ate. Typically symptoms of raisins intoxication are seen within 2-3 days after ingestion. I suspect Bubba could be vomiting because of upset stomach, gastroenteritis, infection or dietary indiscretion. Shaking is probably also related to vomiting and nausea. You should follow your vet recommendations, offer Bubba small amounts of bland food every few hours and make sure he is drinking water. Typical stomach upset should resolve within 2-3 days.

Did your vet do a blood test? if not he must do so, this is the only way to know if this is caused by kidney failure (Raisin would be the cause), if the blood test show kidney failure he should be hospitalized for treatment.
