What to do if my old unspayed dog is bleeding and losing balance?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My Lacey (chihuahua/8lbs) is 12 years old and started spotting blood two days ago. She has never been fixed and I've had her since 2 months. Its hard to get her to a vet bc of Covid, but need to know is there something I can do. She does not seem to be in pain, but has started loosing balance from time to time.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Spotting blood is most likely related to uterine infection called pyometra. If left untreated, it may become a very serious condition, so please try and get Lacey seen by your local vets as soon as possible. If it is uterine infection, you will have to get Lacey neutered, as this is the only reliable treatment for pyometra.
