My kitten's eyes aren't better after 5 weeks. Should I see a vet?

Hi, I have adopted a kitten (Mila) over a month ago. Mila was a stray kitten diagnosed with Rhinotracheitis, the vet told me to treat her badly infected eyes with Tetracycline (an antibiotic ointment to treat secondary bacteria), however, it has been 5 weeks and there is little improvement. her eyes are still covered with a white layer,moreover, her third eyelids are protruding. Should her eyes be treated with antiviral ointment or else? I think she has keratitis. Thank you

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mila. Oh my, her eyes look really bad. If the Tetracycline isn't working, yes she needs a different medication but I can't say what without seeing her in person. I would say her eyes are a medical emergency and she needs to see a vet immediately. Please take her into one now. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I’m sorry to hear about Fifi! The most common reason for eye infection in a kitten this age is feline herpes virus. Herpes-related eye ulcers can be very frustrating to treat but the first thing you should know is that it can take 4 or more weeks of treatment to completely resolve. If the antibiotic drops and ointment helped but the infection came back as soon as you stopped, go back to treating with them - and be prepared to keep at it for a month if needed. If the drops you used did not seem to help at all, talk to your vet about switching to a different antibiotic which might be more effective. I’d also strongly advise AGAINST putting plain water in the eye as it dries out the eye. Instead, use sterile saline drops like those used for re-wetting contacts for humans. A warm wet cloth is fine for cleaning the outside of the eyes gently. Best of luck to you and Fifi!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. If Henry had an upper respiratory infection / eye infection, it may still be resolving. If it is due to a viral infection, the medications won't help unfortunately and you just have to wait it out and wait for his immune system to fight it off. If he begins squinting his eye or it becomes red / swollen, I would take him back in to be examined by a veterinarian. Otherwise just keep monitoring the eye for now.I hope this helps! My kittens eyes looks different from others
Hello and thank you for using Boop by Petco. The eyes are infected and very inflamed. There is a protruding third eyelid in the right eye, possibly that's way the eye looks different. I suspect that there are also corneal ulcers present, which also can change the colour of eyes. Please, take the kitten to your local vets today as the eyes need to be treated right away.

My cats eye looks sore it seems to have got worse should I be concerned or will it heal it's self
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is very difficult to make a recommendation without at least seeing a photo of the eye. All I can tell you without seeing a photo is that if the eye looks worse to you then Millie needs to see a vet. Eyes are very delicate and can go from bad to worse very quickly to the point where she could lose not only her vision but the actual eye itself. I consider eye problems emergencies so I suggest you get her to a vet as soon as possible. Best wishes.

I'm sorry that you are having this issue. I know the vets are far away but she really needs to see one. That left eye looks very bad and I'm not sure home treatment will help. The eye looks swollen and you can't even actually see the globe (eyeball) - it may be abnormal/injured. That eye looks painful and the kitten looks very unhappy. Please try to get her to a vet. In the meantime, the only thing I can recommend you do is keep the eye rinsed out with saline solution. Like this eye wash: http://ph.element14.com/roebuck/e404t/refill-eyewash-first-aid-pk2/dp/1376475 If you can't get the eye wash you can make some at home by doing the following: 1. Put one cup of water and ½ teaspoon of salt into a pot. Put the lid on. 2. Boil for 15 minutes with the lid on (set a timer). 3. Set the pan aside until cooled to a room temperature. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. These kittens have an infection around their eyes, and especially at such a young age infections can lead to loss of sight. I recommend you have them into a vet right away to get some eye medication for them. You will likely need an antibiotic, and therefore will require a prescription, so you need to take them to a vet. If you can't get to a vet right away, use natural tears (human product is ok, just make sure no medications are present and it is just natural tears), and apply this 4-6 times a day to keep the eye lubricated. This will try to prevent an ulcer which can lead to more complications with sight. Best of luck with the little ones!

My kitten has an eye infection and was wondering what I should do. I started suddenly we adopted her from the shelter recently she is about 5 months old.
Most likely Cosmic has an upper respiratory infection that has led to the eye issue. These infections are common in shelter cats. A scratch on the cornea can also lead to signs of infection in the eye. It is best to have Cosmic examined by a veterinarian to determine what is the cause of the eye issue. Left untreated an eye problem can rapidly progress so it's important to have Cosmic checked out soon. There are no safe eye ointments you can get over the counter for cats and he may actually need an oral antibiotic to resolve the issue. Poor Snowball! Since she is still squinting with watery eye discharge after 6 days on Terramycin, you should take her to the vet now. The most common cause of recurrent eye issues and sneezing is due to viral infections (herpesvirus and calicivirus) that can cause both eye and upper respiratory signs when they shed intermittently. Signs typically resolve once the virus is done shedding, but many cats can also develop secondary bacterial infections which require antibiotics for treatment. In the long term, discuss using a Lysine supplement (Viralys is one example) for Snowball with her vet. I hope that all goes well for Snowball!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Azra. Eyes infections are common in young kittens, but more serious problems such as a corneal ulcer can occur. The veterinarian will examine her and likely perform some eye tests to determine the cause of her symptoms. I would recommend calling other primary care veterinarians in your area and see if she can be seen sooner. Then you can always get her records and follow up with her normal veterinarian. If this is not an option, then I would take her to an emergency veterinarian. Eye issues can advance quickly in some cases. I hope this information helps!

Kitten eyes are blind and blurry white and she can't see
Hello. This kitten has severe infection in both eyes. This requires IMMEDIATE veterinary attention if there is any chance of salvaging her eyes. She may have poor or no vision no matter what is done, but without medical intervention, it is likely that she will have to lose both eyes. She should be examined immediately and once evaluated, treatment can be started which will probably be a combination of oral and topical antibiotics. She may need to see a veterinary eye specialist if she does not start to improve, or she may need to have the eyes surgically removed. Hopefully, with immediate attention, she can improve. Please take her to your veterinarian or closest emergency clinic right away.
