My Chihuahua is sick after eating birdseed. What should I do?

My Chihuahua ate grass and vomited her food this morning. Now she is not eating. She appears to be attempting to have a bowel movement, but with little feces, and it is loose. We have outdoor bird feeders, and I have seen her looking for seed on the ground, and wanting to eat it. I'm concerned that this may be the reason she is sick. Please advise...

Poor girl, she may have a stomach illness causing this, or if she did eat the birdseed, it could be a cause. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then in the morning feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. You should start offering him small amount of water about 1.5-2hrs after the had the tablets. Start with 2-3 tablespoon of water and if he drinks it and keeps it down, you can slowly increase the volume of water every 45-60 minutes. If he is not sick after water, you can introduce some bland food, for example cooked chicken or white fish and give that to him every 2-3 hrs. You can add a bit of rice or pasta into it. If everything goes well, you should be able to put him back on his regular food within 24-48hrs.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The Mexican Bird of Paradise is toxic to dogs. It can cause gastro-intestinal upset, labored breathing, eye discharge and sometimes neurologic problems. The most common signs are stomach upset: vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. I am hoping that Buddy's symptoms are mild. If he is eating and has stopped vomiting I would feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or is still vomiting he should see a Vet today for supportive care. I hope this helps and I wish Buddy the best!

My chihuahua has had loose stool for 3 days. She threw up her food yesterday and today. I don't know what is wrong.
Poor Alaina! She could have an infection, parasite, upset stomach from something she ate, pancreatitis, etc. If she is otherwise acting normal, then you could withhold food for the day and see if the vomiting and diarrhea resolves. If so, then feed a small amount of a bland diet, boiled chicken and white rice, this afternoon and see how she does. Continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then slowly transition back to her old food. If the vomiting/diarrhea continues then she needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. Hope she feels better soon.
