My parrot is fluffed, raspy, pacing at cage bottom. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a red crowned amazon parrot and recently it has been pacing back and forth at the bottom of its cage fluffed up and making a raspy air filled scream almost. I was wondering if I should be concerned. It does this for about 5 minutes then just returns to grooming itself like nothing ever happened. Should I be concerned? Its about 17 years old

Thanks for reaching out. The raspy voice and sitting on bottom of the cage are concerning. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Respiratory infections (bacterial, fungal) are common, as is aspiration. Vitamin A deficiencies can play a part also. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid. Good luck.
