My cat got essential oil on her fur and is shaking. Is it toxic?

My cat accidently got essential oil on her fur, not a lot.i read that it is toxic and I tried to wash it off immediately with water and baby soap. She isn't vomiting at all so far but I have noticed shes shaking like there is a muscle problem or she is getting the water off of her. It's 5am here and i dont know what to do...

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Alice. You did the right thing by washing her right away. Try to dry her off further to see if that helps with the twitching. Keep her as quiet and comfortable as possible. If by when the vet opens she is still shaking, take her into one right away to get checked out. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. As long as your cat doesn't eat/drink an excessive amount of this shampoo, she should be just fine. And as long as you didn't get any into her eyes, she should be OK. In the future, it is not recommended to use human shampoos on animals - there are special animal shampoos that are not as irritating if gotten into the eyes, and nontoxic if consumed. I recommend monitoring for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or any neurologic signs such as tremors or seizures. These could indicate a toxicity. If she is squinting her eyes, this could mean you got shampoo in her eyes and caused damage to her corneas. If you see any of these signs, she should be seen by a veterinarian right away. I am sorry to hear about your kitty. Unfortunately it appears this product can be toxic in cats. I would wash your kitty with dawn dishsoap if he is alert enough not to inhale any liquid during the bath (don't bathe him if he is seizuring or unconcious) and call your vet right away for further information on treatment that will be needed. Hello, and thanks for your question about Mandu. Cats can be very sensitive to essential oils, and there is limited data available for many essential oils (as far as how much is required to start seeing symptoms), so you should refrain from putting any on Mandu in the future. For now, if she otherwise seems to be acting normal, I would make sure you get any residue off that's still on her skin, and watch her closely. You can "spot clean" the area with a mild soap (I often recommend Dawn dish soap) and lukewarm water. The most common symptoms of thyme exposure would be GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), or neurologic disturbances (mentation changes, seizures, etc) so if anything seems "off" with Mandu then a vet visit is warranted. Hope this helps! I bet Mandu will do ok, but it's good to keep an extra close eye on her for the next 48 hours.

I did research the name, and I could not find any information about it being toxic to cats. I suspect that if it was causing problems, it would have come up on my veterinary database. However, I am not a big fan of essential oils in cats. They do not tolerate them as well as dogs do. So, I would not use it again in my cats to be on the safe side. I think that they are going to be just fine. If they did start to show irritation - you will need to bathe in Dawn dish soap to get the oil off. I am worried that my new essential oil diffuser is making my cats sick. One is sneezing and has squinted eyes. Another cat vomited. I packed diffuser away, mopped floor, washed bedding, etc... If they are not better by morning should they go to vet?
Hello. I think you did a great job removing a possible irritant from your home. Cats can be very sensitive to these volatile compounds, but I very much doubt that you caused any illness or harm. If they are eating & drinking well tomorrow, it would not hurt to have them seen by your vet, but if all the symptoms have abated, then I would not worry any further. Just use your best judgment, as they really were not exposed to the oils for any real length of time. Take care.

I would make sure that you got all the oil and rinse well after washing. She was probably sitting underneath a car and got oily that way. I would observe her for a day and if she shows no sign of illness there is no need to take her to a vet.

I washed my cat with tropiclean oatmeal and teatree shampoo. My cat hasn't been eating and acting very aggressive it's been two days and I thought it might of been the shampoo. I just read the shampoo I used on my cat is for dogs only. Please help. T
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Ludo! Tea Tree oil is safe in very dilute concentrations. It depends on the concentration of the shampoo you used whether it has anything to do with Ludo's symptoms. The issue with cats is that they groom and can lick the tea tree oil off. Symptoms are usually drooling and nausea in mild cases to tremors and seizures in severe cases. Symptoms usually occur with a few hours to 12 hours after exposure. There is no antidote just supportive care and bathing the tea tree oil off. Sometimes the pet needs 3 days of supportive care to get off the toxicity. While you wait for your Vet to open Bath Ludo in Dawn. Then call when they open for an appointment. I hope this helps and I wish Ludo a speedy recovery!

This may be due to stress, and perhaps swallowing some soapy water. I would wrap him in a warm towel just out of the dryer, and let him snuggle with you. Once he relaxes and calms down I expect him to feel better in a few hours. If he stops eating or drinking or starts with a lot of vomiting then please bring him right in for an exam and treatment. My cat has an oily, wet substance all over her,hasn't eaten and is turning her back to everything looking with her head. What is wrong?
It sounds as if Meeko has gotten into something, potentially amsomething toxic that is making her act abnormally. First, I would recommend bathing her to try and remove whatever oilynsubstance she has gotten on her coat. If it is something toxic and she tries to lick it off it could make her sicker. Continue to try to feed her and keep her as comfortable as possible. If she is still not eating after 48 hours you may want to consider taking her to the vet. If Meeko starts acting even more abnormally, starts vomiting and/or having diarrhea or if she has seizures (a common side effect of some toxins) then she will need to be see by your vet. Hello. Cats are very curious, but very careful when tasting new things. It is very unlikely that she got more that a small lick begore deciding this was pretty nasty stuff. Essential oils can be toxic to cats, the problem occurs when people mistakenly apply them to a pet, & then a cat is almost forced to lick her coat. So investigating the soap pump will not be harmful to Squishy. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
