Dog dazed after swimming, pale gums. Is it water intoxication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

Worried our 25 lbs might have some water intoxication from swimming. Was acting dazed and confused, pale gums, and dilated pupils. She has become more alert in the last hour and peed a lot. Her gums don't look as pale as previously. Anything we can do to help recover?

I recommend to have Thecia checked by a veterinarian quickly to play it safe. Water intoxication is possible but it is rare. Symptoms like this can also be due to other potentially serious conditions like ingesting drugs, human medications or slug bait. Simple bloodwork can help to figure out if this is water intoxication or something else that may require different treatment. Additionally, severe water intoxication does require stabilization of the electrolyte levels. Here is a link about the condition just in case: https://www.aspcapro.org/resource/shelter-health-poison-control/treating-acute-water-intoxication-pets I hope this helps and that Thecia recovers quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.
